Description

Crème de Mûre wasn’t in the earlier Merlet batch, so here’s a new description written in the same style as the other Merlet liqueurs. It blends two complementary blackberry varieties with a small amount of red berries for richness and complexity. UK and US retailers name the varieties as Black Diamond, Himalaya and Perle Noire. As with the rest of the Merlet range, the family works closely with partner growers and picks fruit at its ripest, using their experience as blackcurrant growers and winemakers. The blackberries and red berries are soaked in pure alcohol to draw out their flavour, then pressed, filtered and lightly sweetened. Merlet controls every stage and uses a very high concentration of fruit, which gives the liqueur its intensity and complexity. Wine Enthusiast rated it 94 points and called it a top pick for sparkling wine and cocktails.

About Merlet’s fruit liqueurs: In 1979 Gilles Merlet planted his first blackcurrant bushes in the Cognac region. The berries were so good that in 1983 he created his own Crème de Cassis de Saintonge, which also marked the birth of the Merlet brand. A full range of fruit liqueurs followed. Because the Merlets are fruit growers and winemakers themselves, they can work closely with partner growers and pick fruit at its ripest. The fruit is soaked in pure alcohol to draw out its flavour, then pressed and filtered. They control every stage, from sourcing to production, and use a very high concentration of fruit, which gives the liqueurs their intensity and complexity.
