Wines and Fortified Wines

Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grape juice.

The chemical composition of wine is about 87.7% water, 11% alcohol, 1% acid, and 0.2% tannins.

Fortified wine is a wine which has a distilled spirit added to it (usually brandy), to increase its alcohol content – fortifying it.

The original reason for fortification was to preserve wines,  as the higher alcohol level and additional sweetness help to preserve the wine.

Fortified wines can be made in either dry or sweet style.
